The River Hamble is just 20 minutes from Southampton and it's absolutely stunning. Our kayak and paddleboard hire unit is right in the middle of it, in the picturesque village of Hamble-le-Rice, which makes it a brilliant spot to launch from for all sorts of day trips and little adventures.
If you're after something different to do this summer, here are five of our favourite routes from the Yak Shack.

A quick word on tides and safety
The Hamble is a tidal river, so a little bit of planning goes a long way. Before you set off, check the tide times, try to paddle out against the current and come back with it, and always wear a buoyancy aid (we give you one free with every hire). The river can get busy with boats in the summer, so stick close to the banks and be visible. We'll run you through all of this when you arrive.
The Creek
If you're looking for a quick adventure and a bit of nature, this is the perfect trip. At high tide you can access a little creek just south of the Yak Shack, it's only about 10 minutes' paddle away, and when the water's high enough you can go all the way up to the nature trail. There are some lovely secluded spots along the way for a picnic. Just don't get caught out by the tide as it dries out pretty quickly once it turns.

Lunch in Warsash
If you prefer a leisurely paddle with lunch at the end of it, head over to Warsash for a bite at the Rising Sun. To get there you have to cross the main channel, so make sure you look left and right, cross quickly and directly, keep clear of other vessels, and don't hang around in the middle. It can get busy in summer so be mindful of traffic. Once you're across, it's a quick paddle south to the slipway we've marked on the map. When you pull up, make sure to leave your gear high enough that it doesn't get swept away by the rising tide.

The Jolly Sailor
If you fancy the Bursledon side of the river, there's a lovely pub for lunch just opposite Swanwick called The Jolly Sailor, who have a pontoon you can use. It's a nice longer paddle, great for anyone who wants a proper lunch and a sit-down before making their way back. Time it with the tide and it's a really relaxed day out.

Paddle to Swanwick
One for people who fancy a longer paddle. For this trip you really need to time the tide, otherwise it'll be a long old journey. Aim to leave as the tide is coming in, and plan your return for once it's turned and is going back out again, that way you've got the current doing half the work for you. There's The Old Ship pub in Swanwick and a lovely footpath along the river bank if you want to stretch your legs once you're there. Stick to the shoreline as you're paddling because this stretch of the river can get busy with sailing boats and powerboats.

Floating Cafe
Still want to go further? Great. Just beyond the bridge there's a lovely little floating cafe that's only accessible by water. They do a great bacon butty, and how cool is it to get served while still sitting on your board? From here you can even explore further around Hamble Country Park and get into the untouched part of the river. If you've got the stamina it is well worth the trip. As with the other routes, always check the tide and make sure you don't get caught out.

Getting served at the floating cafe well worth the paddle.
