Paddleboarding on Loch Ness: My Self-Service Adventure with Yak Shack

16 June 20264 min read·By the Yak Shack Team

My paddleboarding experience with Yak Shack at Loch Ness was an unforgettable way to explore one of Scotland's most iconic locations. The self-service setup made the whole thing incredibly convenient, especially if, like me, you'd rather just get on the water without queues or fuss.

Using the Yak Shack app, I had all the information I needed before I even arrived, from equipment instructions to safety guidance, which made the process smooth and straightforward from start to finish.

Out on Loch Ness with Yak Shack, the loch was glassy and still when I set off.

A spectacular place to paddle, but respect the conditions

Loch Ness is a truly spectacular place to paddleboard, but it's worth noting that conditions can change quickly. The loch can become surprisingly choppy at times, even on what looks like a calm day, so it's important to stay aware of the conditions and paddle within your ability.

I chose to stay closer to the shoreline, which not only felt more comfortable when the water got rougher, but also gave me some of the best views of the surrounding landscape.

Quick safety note for Loch Ness

The water on Loch Ness stays cold all year, around 12°C even in summer, so dress for the water rather than the weather and always wear your buoyancy aid (it comes free with every hire). Check the forecast before you set off, hug the shoreline, and don't be tempted to cross the loch. If you're new to paddleboarding, stick to the sheltered bays near the shack for your first session.

Paddling past the Lochside Hostel gave a completely different perspective on this part of the Highlands.

Lochside scenery you can only see from the water

One of the highlights was seeing the lochside scenery from the water. The views across the loch were stunning, and paddling past the area around the Lochside Hostel showed me a side of the Highlands you simply can't appreciate from the shore. Being out on the water let me take in the sheer scale of Loch Ness in a way that's impossible from land.

How the self-service hire works

What made it all so easy was the app. Everything runs through it, you complete a quick safety briefing, then scan the smart lock on your kayak or paddleboard to release it. No waiting around for staff, no paperwork, just turn up, unlock, and go.

Your paddle and buoyancy aid are included, and because all the equipment instructions and safety guidance are in the app, you arrive already knowing exactly what to do. For anyone who values a bit of independence on their day out, it's brilliant.

The freedom to paddle at your own pace

What I enjoyed most was the freedom. There was no set route and no timetable, so I could paddle at my own pace, stop for photos, and simply take in the scenery. The mix of peaceful moments close to shore and the thrill of being out on such a famous body of water made for a genuinely memorable adventure.

Would I recommend it?

Without a doubt. Yak Shack offers a brilliant way to experience Loch Ness independently while still giving you the information and support to do it safely. If you're after a unique outdoor activity in the Highlands, I'd highly recommend giving it a go. Just remember to respect the loch, keep an eye on the conditions, and enjoy the incredible views along the way.

If you're planning your own trip, it's worth reading our complete guide to kayaking and paddleboarding on Loch Ness first, it covers the best routes, what to pack, and the safety essentials in more detail.
